The steps to our back deck were worn and rickety, so we worked all day to replace them. Here you can see the final stage of our progress…many hands make light labor.

As we walked up and down the stairs throughout the day, it made me think of success. So many times we work towards a goal moving up in steady steps, only to find that sometimes we take a couple steps back. Moving up and down is part of the plan, part of progress, part of success. It is frustrating when you move backwards when all you want to do is move forward. And it can be devastating when it happens more than once.

Sometimes in life we have to make our own steps. We have to create our own path and defy what other people think is right for us. It can be hard when you don’t fit the mold and have to explain to everyone why you are heading in a different direction. It is even worse to have ‘arrived’ at success only to find that it is empty and meaningless because you are not able to be yourself. And yet it takes courage to make your own way instead of taking the standard path.

When you feel like you are moving forward and get pushed back a couple steps by circumstances, don’t let it get you down. It might be time to renovate and create new steps…which means destroying the old and going into build mode. Get all your frustrations out when you tear things apart, and wear yourself down to the nub while you build a new path. It takes work, but it is worth it…you are worth it. So as you climb your own steps to success, keep you eyes on the goal and don’t let set backs stop you…just take it all one day at a time.
