These oil lamps are part of a larger piece that includes 19 connected forms. It was created by clay artist Mary Murray (gordonmurrayisme@yahoo.com) in Brevard, NC. Each oil lamp was hand thrown on the wheel, then connected before they were fired. It was an anniversary gift for my Mom.

What I find inspiring about this is that Mary had never done this before, or since. It is truly a one of a kind work of art. When she was approached about it she wasn’t sure how she was going to accomplish the task, yet she tackled it anyway. It has been over twenty years since this piece was created, and my family cherishes it and tells the story about how it was created every time we light the wicks.

I encourage you today to tackle something you do not know how to do. Try something new or challenging and see where it takes your work. This may be the day you create a one-of-a-kind work of art that will live far beyond your days…ya’ never know!
